It was a vibrant an empowering day in honor of TDoV that started with a demonstration at the Utah State Capitol. Local activists and community leaders shared inspiring speeches, amplifying our voices and pushing for positive change.
From there we marched down State Street in Downtown Salt Lake City. Full of color, energy, and solidarity as we made our way to City Creek Park. This joyful celebration of what it means to be trans culminated in an open mic sharing circle where dozens of participants opened their hearts and shared their personal stories.
As the day transitioned into evening, we headed to Club Verse for an unforgettable Visibility Party. Volunteers spent the morning decorating and setting up a photo booth to capture the magic. The venue hosted trans-themed cocktails while trans performers filled the stage – from drag performances and dances to cirque style aerialists, and trans gogo dancers who traveled from out of state just to perform at this special occasion.
2024 shattered our previous attendance records with more than 400 people coming out on a Sunday in July to dip their toes, mingle, play yard games and enjoy some backyard style BBQ.
For many in the trans community, public swimming pools can be a difficult or uncomfortable space. This party gives all who attend a chance to come as they are and be themselves without stigma or embarrassment. Volunteers flipped burgers over the flaming hot grill and kept the food coming, serving over 350 plates!
November 20th each year is a globally recognized day to honor the lives lost throughout the year due to anti-transgender violence and/or suicide. The Glitter Foundation dedicates a monument to these individuals, with a flag hung for each life lost next to their name, picture, and story.
2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the trans flag, and we had the pleasure of welcoming Monica Helms – the original creator of the trans flag – to come speak at our TDoR ceremony. She spoke about how the flag came to be, and her hatred of November 20th due to the sadness of what it means. Following the ceremony, Monica joined us for a candlelight vigil at the flag memorial where we gathered to read the names, stories, and vowed support each other in times of both joy and struggle in the year moving forward.
Of the 412 names represented from around the globe in 2024, four of those individuals were from our own community here in Salt Lake City.
